According to the Nagasaki Trading Firm Journal, it was from 1737 to 1760 that soy sauce was exported to the Netherlands as motokata nimotsu (official trade freight). During these 24 years, approximately 46 kilolitres of soy sauce were exported to Batavia HQ, and 15.6 kilolitres (about 1/3 of the total amount) were transferred to the Netherlands. This means that the annual average of soy sauce export (except 1742 and 1743) amounted to 707 litres. In addition, a substantial amount of soy sauce was presumably exported to the Netherlands as waki nimotsu (private trade freight). |
