Honjozo Soy Sauce Produced by Kikkoman do Brasil Receives Vegan Certification

In January 2025, Kikkoman do Brasil Indústria e Comércio de Alimentos e Bebidas Ltda. (KDB), the Kikkoman Groups’ soy sauce production and sales base in South America, received vegan certification from FoodChain ID for its Honjozo (traditionally brewed) soy sauce produced and marketed for the Brazilian market. KDB began the process for obtaining vegan certification in 2024. FoodChain ID, selected for certification, is a company providing certification services to the food industry in terms of quality, safety, regulatory compliance and sustainability, and the certification body through which KDB previously received non-GMO (made without the use of genetically modified organisms) certification in 2023. A meticulous review was conducted to ensure that no raw ingredients used in the soy sauce are animal-derived, meeting the strict vegan requirements and ultimately resulting in certification.

According to Datassential, a market research and intelligence firm specializing in the food and beverage industry, plant-based menu options have increased by more than 60% in the past four years, with continued growth expected. Furthermore, Dataessential also predicts that by 2025 more than 40% of restaurant menus will include plant-based options (*). These results show that many consumers are interested in vegan and vegetarian diets.

A KDB marketing representative commented, “I am proud that our Honjozo soy sauce has been certified as vegan.
