Kikkoman's first dark soy sauce was launched onto the Indian market
Achieving a natural and deep color without the use of food additives

Kikkoman India Pvt. Ltd. (KID), Kikkoman's sales and marketing company in India, launched the group’s first ever dark soy sauce crafted exclusively for the Indian market in February 2024. This new product, named “Kikkoman Dark Soy Sauce”, imparts both rich color and deliciousness to dishes, and targets Asian restaurants, primarily Indian Chinese cuisine.
The most distinctive feature of “Kikkoman Dark Soy Sauce” is its deep color of soy sauce. In recent years, “Indian Chinese cuisine” (Chinese cuisine with an Indian twist) has increasingly become popular in India. People there tend to prefer darker-colored dishes because they look tastier, so dark soy sauce is often used to color dishes. While many dark soy sauce products distributed in the country use coloring agents and chemical seasonings to darken the color, Kikkoman Dark Soy Sauce uses no food additives but a cutting-edge proprietary technology to deliver the deep color of dark soy sauce. In addition, because the product uses Kikkoman “Honjozo” (traditionally-brewed) Soy Sauce produced in Japan as the base, it adds to dishes not only a deep, appetizing color but also a flavorful taste.
Since starting its operations in February 2021, KID has worked to convey the deliciousness of the Kikkoman Honjozo Soy Sauce, which is produced by fermenting and aging soybeans and wheat by the actions of microorganisms such as koji mold, lactic acid bacteria, and yeast, through a variety of products and marketing activities. “Kikkoman Dark Soy Sauce” is one of the products developed to meet local taste preference. In terms of our approach to Indian households, we use Indian Chinese food - which has wide acceptability in ordinary households- as a driver for the market penetration of Kikkoman brand into this market. With the launch of “Kikkoman Dark Soy Sauce”, we aim for raising people’s awareness of Kikkoman Honjozo Soy Sauce and over time, eventually making it a common household seasoning that is regularly consumed and used for cooking in India. We will encourage Asian restaurants, primarily Indian Chinese cuisine to adopt our products through various business activities such as sales pitch, development of recipes and holding seminars and cooking contests.
Kikkoman will continue to deliver “Deliciousness” to dining tables around the world by offering its products considering the needs of local markets and contribute to building rich food cultures.
