President Kikkoman Inc. (PKI) Holds Parent-Child Shokuiku Workshop
- Sharing the Joy and Importance of Food with Taiwan Consumers -
October 4, 2024
In August 2024, President Kikkoman Inc. (PKI), the Kikkoman Group soy sauce production base in Taiwan, held a summertime “Parent-Child Shokuiku (Food Education) Workshop” for elementary school students and their parents. Aiming to promote rich, varied and healthy food lifestyles by communicating the joy and importance of food to consumers in Taiwan, the event was held over 3 days, with 1 day each in northern, central and southern Taiwan. This event is highly popular, receiving upwards of 2,000 registrants every year.

After decision by lottery draw, a total of 100 participants attended the 2024 Shokuiku 3-day Workshop. Held at universities throughout Taiwan offering a Culinary Arts Major, and through the cooperation of professors at these universities, on each day a program of a lecture on Taiwanese food, a hands-on soy sauce moromi pressing experience, and a cooking workshop was offered.
During the food lecture a quiz on the major producing regions for food items harvested and produced in Taiwan, including mangoes, oolong tea, oysters and rice vermicelli, was given. The fervent discussion and thoughtful selection of areas on maps by parents and children, became an invaluable reminder of where the food they eat regularly comes from.
In the cooking workshop, the elementary school students took the lead to prepare dishes using Kikkoman products. Wearing serious expressions, the children selected a balanced array of toppings to arrange on the dough while making “teriyaki chicken pizza”. Upon enjoying the prepared dishes, comments of “delicious!” propelled conversation between participants and filled the venue with smiles and warmth.

After completion of the Shokuiku Program we received rewarding comments from participants such as, “I knew that the lottery was highly competitive, so I feel very lucky to have been able to participate this time. The program offered abundant content variety, each of which were interesting, making the day full and productive for the children. I am grateful to Kikkoman for offering this opportunity”.
In addition, the event planner and organizer reflected on the experience as follows, “Thanks to the backing of food experts, the program was rich in content, and even included new information and learning opportunities for the adults as well. This event was a truly rare opportunity for us Kikkoman employees to directly interact with consumers!”
PKI will continue to support the rich, varied and healthy food lifestyles of the people of Taiwan with the ongoing provision and enhancement of shokuiku events.
Kikkoman and Shokuiku
Kikkoman considers shokuiku (Food education) to be a special responsibility of companies involved with food and food products. Since announcing our “Commitment to Shokuiku” in 2005, we have been providing information, knowledge and experiences related to food both in Japan and overseas, and promoting shokuiku activities rooted in our business. Some examples are the Kikkoman Soy Sauce Seminar, various food experiential events and our factory tour. We will continue to carry out a variety of shokuiku activities to cultivate interest in and enjoyment of food, hoping to contribute to rich and varied consumer lifestyles that are full of delicious memories.
