Peel the yam, cut into 4 to 5 cm (2 in.) lengths, then into 8 equal-size sticks. Rinse the cherry tomatoes, then puncture the surface of each 2 to 3 times with a toothpick.

Cover a grill net in aluminum foil. Arrange the yam and cherry tomatoes (1) on top. Grill over strong flame for 5 to 6 minutes (3.5 minutes if using a double-sided grill), and remove once a light grill mark can be seen on the peel of the cherry tomatoes. Once a grill mark can be seen on the yam sticks, turn these over and grill for an additional 2 minutes (1.5 minutes in a double-sided grill).

Place the yams and cherry tomatoes onto a plate, sprinkle on some soy sauce and enjoy while hot.
